Mulled Wine for Celebrating the Holiday Spirit

Ingredients
  • 2 bottles red wine (syrah or cabernet sauvignon works well.)
  • 1 Navel orange
  • 1-2 Tablespoons brown sugar (less or more to taste)
  • 5 juniper berries (not crucial but nice)
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 3 whole allspice
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 star anise (optional)*
  • *Available at specialty stores or online
Instructions
  1. Remove zest from orange being careful to avoid white pith. Slice orange into thin slices.
  2. Combine wine, zest, sugar and whole spices into a pot and warm over low heat for about 30 minutes. Do not let simmer or boil.
  3. To serve, strain out whole spices and add a few orange slices to the brew. I have placed in a crockpot on warm to serve throughout an evening.
  4. To make in advance, my friend recommends combining ingredients and heat for about 10 minutes until sugar dissolves and flavors begin to blend, then refrigerate overnight in a covered container. Heat for about 20 minutes before serving.
